Cancer confusion: How to detangle the mass of information when researching ...

Right after she was diagnosed with breast cancer Jan. 3, Judy Herrick went home and Googled the invasive ductile carcinoma she was carrying.

The results only intensified the shock of the diagnosis:

“What I found was so overwhelming and nonfocused,” Herrick said. “There were blogs and information from all over, and I hadn’t even made a decision on what to do.

“So I just shut that down and decided to stay away from the Internet.”

Herrick knew better, but she was caught in the same deer-in-the-headlights confusion that at first traps all of us diagnosed with cancer.

“I’m one of the key people who tell new associates we have this great research library at the Lacks Cancer Center, but when I was diagnosed, I was completely, ‘What do I do?’” she said.

An employee of Trinity Health, Herrick is a regional consultant on leadership and staff development based at Saint Mary’s Health Care in Grand Rapids.

Part of getting a grip means trying to understand exactly what’s happening inside our bodies, so we can make decisions, understand our options and regain some sense of control over the uncontrollable.

“Even the act of looking for information can be therapeutic,” said Brett Powers. “It clears the mind to know doctors are doing all they can, and it’s especially true with more advanced cancers.”

Powers is librarian of Michigan’s largest public cancer resource library , one of the top five largest in the country: the Warren Reynolds Library at the Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary’s, which has a branch at the Cancer Center at Metro Health Village.

The library is named after the late WOOD-TV sports director, who had prostate cancer and died in 2000. Founded with the help of and supported through community fundraisers, the library is open free to anyone, regardless of where he or she is getting treatment.

So how do we research the enemy within without scaring ourselves to death?

Patients of Dr. Thomas Gribbin start with a research prescription he writes to be filled at the Warren Reynolds Library.

Gribbin is medical director of the Lacks Cancer Center, a partner in Cancer and Hematology Centers of Western Michigan and has been an oncologist for 25 years.

I suppose that if you’re buying a book to learn "how" to hunt ducks, then you are (like me) already at a disadvantage. So much in waterfowling is dependent on tradition, community, and access, so there are natural barriers to entry for the novice.

This book does an excellent job providing basic coverage of key duck hunting issues, but it is (of course) not a substitute for a good mentor or listening to some old timers yack about their previous seasons.

Of particular worth are the decoy spreads and the overview of different hunting venues. But perhaps the greatest contribution is the insight on duck-hunting lingo. I was unaware that I was a puddle jumper without a milk run, who had dabbled at pass shooting, but now I know.

Seriously, for those of us stuck in a rut hunting farm ponds, the introductions to river, lake, and flooded timber are intriguing and motivating. The basic waterfowl information is useful, and the various tips, tricks & techniques are all serviceable. This is a very nice introduction for the new hunter, and should serve nicely as a reference volume for those with more experience.
