Suburban splendor in urban Hyde Park

Four new houses are going up at Stony Brook Farm, a subdivision in Hyde Park that’s near the 450-acre Stony Brook Reservation. Set on seven and a half acres of land that were once a quarry, this urban development, which will eventually have 23 homes, has a distinctly suburban feel. Ten homes are already occupied, some by owners who work for the city of Boston.

Three of the new houses are in various stages of construction with the fourth about to be built. All feature four bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths and all but one come with attached or separate garages. But the style of the houses are different, as developer David Raftery offers Colonials, farm houses, Arts & Crafts and gambrels to make each home in the subdivision distinctive. All are on good-sized lots with big backyards for kids to play.

We took a look at 10 Maple Leaf Drive, a 2,800-square-foot gambrel that’s available for $519,000. The exterior of this house, with three sets of dormer windows, has moss green clapboard shingles in front and HardiPlank on all other sides. A stamped concrete walkway leads past a grass front yard onto a columned farmer’s porch.

Once inside the foyer, to the right is a large living room with oak floors, recessed lighting and six windows. On the other side of the foyer is a formal dining room with four windows, oak floors and paneled wainscoting.

A big selling point of this house is a large open area in the rear of the house that features an open kitchen with a family room and a great room on either side.

The recessed-lit kitchen features 27 cherry cabinets, with brown granite counters and a large island. It will be outfitted with a double-door Kitchen Aid refrigerator and Frigidaire Professional four-burner electric stove and dishwasher.

Both the great room and family room have double sliding-glass doors out to a rear wooden deck. Beyond the deck is a good-sized back yard and side yards surrounded by stone walls.

There’s also a half bath on this floor with beige ceramic floors and a granite-topped wood vanity.

The second floor has four bedrooms, all off an oak foyer where there’s also a closet with the house’s washer/dryer connection.

The master bedroom suite has a vaulted ceiling, a walk-in closet with oak floors and a master bathroom with beige ceramic tile floors and tumbled-marble surround for a whirlpool tub. There’s also a separate Fiberglas walk-in shower.
