“I think the design aesthetic there [in south Florida] is more beachy but not so tropical,” said Edwards. “I think inside more neutrals than bright colors. And I think there are ways to do nautical where it’s not so cheesy. For example, I’m all about re-purposing furniture. Go down to the shipyard and grab one of those giant spools and use it as an end table or a stool. You can probably get one for free because they just throw them away.”

As for the storage concerns Floridians face – no basements, crawl-space attics – Edwards suggests  “build drawers into the stairs instead of a closet or bathroom under the staircase.” And then she adds laughing, “Just make sure you own. Landlords don’t like it when you do that kind of thing and you’re renting.”

She came into the celebrity design world through a circuitous route. Growing up in the surburbs of Chicago, Edwards graduated from the Saint Francis University in Joliet with a business degree and went into commercial real estate. One a weekend visit to a friend’s place in Los Angeles she realized she needed a change.

“It was Saturday night and I called my parents and told them I didn’t think I was coming back. I had one piece of luggage, no car, no job, no nothing. I was 25 years old.
