Author has the know-how when it comes to girls' hairstyles

In the early 1990s, a friend told Cozy Friedman about taking her son to a fancy hair salon in the New York City.

"The place made her son cry," says Friedman who at the time had no children of her own. "I asked her why she didn't take him to a salon for kids and she said there weren't any."

Within a short time, Friedman had changed all that. After earning her barber's license, she opened Cozy's Cuts for Kids, a salon for children in New York City.

"If you build it, they will come," says Friedman. "We were busy from day one."

Opening several more locations in Manhattan, Friedman has cut the hair of both Meg Ryan and Kelly Ripa's children. Having filled one need – a place for kids to get their hair cut – Friedman then noted that there weren't any quality hair products for children. She soon fixed that as well, creating So Cozy Hair Care for Children products that are distributed nationwide and include Boo! which treats lice using tea tree oil, a natural repellant, and Swimmer's Shampoo Green Apple.

"I used to think all products were the same and it was just different packaging," says Friedman. "But some products at the store are so harsh you could clean the kitchen floor with them. So I decided to develop hair products and I had the benefit of being able to test them in our salon with thousands of kids."

Never one to slow down, Friedman's book "Cozy's Complete Guide to Girl's Hair: The Cutest Cuts and Sweetest Hairstyles to Do at Home" written with Sheryl Berk (Artisan 2011; $15.95) was just released and is a wonderful guide and tutorial to treating split ends and dandruff (Chapter 6: Hair Emergency); creating great hairdos in short periods of time (Chapter 12: Five Under 5–Minute Styles) and ballerina chignons and ponytail veils in Chapter 13: Special Occasion Styles. There are even hair cutting instructions.

Always one to want to help in a hair emergency, Friedman asked, during our interview, what my biggest hair problem is. When I tell her I want my wavy hair to be straight, she suggests some products but then tells me that wavy hair can be wonderful too.

"When I was young, I had hair envy," she says. "I really feel like that for so many girls their hair is tied to their self–esteem. They see these women on TV with great hair and they want to create it at home,, but on TV they have two or three stylists working on their hair. That's why in our salons and now in the book, we teach girls how to do their hair.
