Faster Dial Up

Google partnership promises '100 times faster' internet for K.C.

By this time next year, Kansas City residents could be browsing the Internet at faster speeds than anywhere else in the country.

That’s the promise anyway, from Google, which struck a deal with the city last week to connect residents with its emerging high-speed Internet service.

"Our goal is to deliver Internet speeds 100 times faster than what most people have access to today,” said Dan Martin, a spokesperson for Google. “In the same way that the transition from dial-up to broadband led to streaming video and countless other applications, we believe ultra high-speed bandwidth will lead to the next generation of new and unpredictable applications.”

The company had previously announced a deal with Great Plains Energy in March to bring its service to the Kansas side of the city, but last week Kansas City Power & Light announced that it would also be partnering with the Web giant to bring service to the Missouri side of the city.

Google, which is notorious for slow roll-outs of its online products, is essentially testing its new venture in Kansas City before expanding to other parts of the country. Martin declined to delve into specifics about how soon other cities may start receiving Google Internet. The service is expected to be available to Kansas City customers in early 2012.

Establishing the new service is aided through a partnership with KCP&L, which will essentially lend Google its hardware.

“The agreement is that we’ll be letting Google utilize our infrastructure, like our poles and things like that, to implement the fiber optic cable more quickly,” said Kelli Hindes, spokesperson for KCP&L.

Gov. Jay Nixon applauded the deal Thursday, May 19, as he marked a milestone for another state technology initiative. The governor was on hand for the completion of phase one of a federally funded broadband expansion project in Ralls County Thursday. The project, funded in part by $19.1 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds, is part of Nixon's $311 million MoBroadbandNow initiative, designed to provide high-speed Internet to residents throughout the state.

“The combination of these two technology initiatives will dramatically increase the reach of broadband access in Missouri,” Nixon said. “That puts us in an ideal position to create thousands of new jobs, and to generate millions of dollars more in vital investments in technology and infrastructure. It will also enhance education, healthcare, public safety and community enrichment, providing long-term benefits to the businesses and people of our state.

Ditching dial-up

The Internet is a rapidly expanding, where those with broadband connections can download movies in minutes, to live as an avatar in Second Life or watch their favorite television programs over the Internet speed increases . As Internet capabilities are becoming more high-tech, dial-up is becoming a technology of the past, with the figures of the Internet connection aging decreases from year to year as broadband becomes both more affordable and wider available. However, a significant number of broadband users remain devoted to their line-connections, expressing concerns about the long-term contracts and reliability. So what are the benefits of dial-up, is this really the time to reflect on the transition to broadband?

Love your broadband switching upDespite be massively faster than dial-up, there are reasons for dial-up continues to have clients such as the possibility of connections measured or unmeasured and assorted packages ranging from free evening and weekend use more expensive “anytime” packages.

Pay-as-you-can goYou have a metered dial-up connection where you only pay for time you use the Internet and prices start at just 1p a minute. And you only need a telephone line. Not technicians, only a free registration CD and you are safe knowing you will not receive a monthly bill

FreedomPay-as-you-go dial-up customers have the freedom to move to a new provider when they want, no minimum term or contracts to sign – in contrast to broadband customers. If you’re happy with your service, you can simply leave, without having to obtain a MAC code.

ServiceBecause Just plug and surf, you are less likely to experience the development and service problems that many broadband customers have had. However, if you do encounter problems, you will not want to solve, since you’ll have to disconnect your Internet connection to call customer service.

PortableHaving fixed dial-up means you can take your Internet with you wherever you go. Provided you have your computer and a phone line, you can dial in a friend’s house, office or on vacation. And if you move it will not break your connection.

Loathe your dial-upDespite the few benefits of dial-up, it in no way comparable to the fastest, most convenient broadband connections that so many people enjoy today. Even in the price where it was once much more competitive than broadband, it’s not doing so well.

SpeedEveryone know that broadband is faster than dial-up, but with many links to reach speeds up to 8Mb, and some going as fast as 24Mb, the difference between what you can do with a broadband connection over dial-up is phenomenal. Broadband means no more waiting for websites to load and the freedom to do what you want, whenever you want.
